JEDDAH: A massive fire engulfed a sponge factory in Kilo 16 on Makkah road here early on Sunday, giving a tough time to Civil Defense teams. However, there was no death or injury in the incident.
“The fire broke out in the courtyard of the factory in an area of 8,000 square meters.
The fire personnel separated the courtyard from the factory and other facilities, preventing it from spreading,” Col. Said Sarhan, a spokesman of Civil Defense in Makkah Region, said.
The fire teams put out the blaze from different sides and successfully neutralized the area, thus saving the factory and a nearby store, he said.
In a related development, another fire broke out in a housing complex near the corniche, Col. Sarhan said.
“The incident, also on Sunday morning, happened on the first floor of a 45-story building. The fire personnel acted fast and put out the fire before it spread to other floors.”
Col. Sarhan said the fire in the building resulted from a short circuit in an air conditioning system.
No evacuation was needed and no casualties were reported, he added.
